Michael Johansen has been a journalist since 1989, working in various media across Canada and abroad. He first came to Labrador in 1981 and has lived here ever since, more or less. He has published one book of fiction, called Confession in Moscow.

After living, working and traveling across Canada and parts of the United States, professional photographer Chris Sampson moved home to Labrador. Although a range of government departments and businesses use his images, Chris is continually amazed people pay him to make photos.

 

 

Writers

Robin Goodfellow-Baikie, originally from Montreal, is a long time resident of Labrador. She has been involved with craft/industry development and environmental activism, and with CBC as a researcher and freelance broadcaster. She and her husband live in North West River.

 

 

Paula Gale is a journalist from the west coast of Newfoundland. She fell in love with Labrador and the people of Labrador while she worked in the region in 2003. She currently works with CBC Radio in St. John’s.

 

 

Paul Pigott is a radio reporter with the CBC in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. He was born in Ontario and moved to Labrador in the mid-1990s to work as editor on the Voisey’s Bay News. He is an avid wilderness kayaker. He has one young daughter.

 

 

Robin Hill is an adult basic education instructor at the College of the North Atlantic, North West River campus. He was born in Toronto, but now lives in Sheshatshiu with his wife and five daughters.

 

 

Jennifer Mitchell was raised in Makkovik and moved to Happy Valley-Goose Bay in 2002. She is an accomplished accordion player and is currently pursuing university studies.

 

 

Keith and Heather Nicol are avid iceberg watchers and have seen them in the Arctic and Antarctic. But their best experiences have been paddling their sea kayaks around them in various parts of the province.

 

 

Writer and artist Clarice Blake Rudkowski was born in North West River, but now lives in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. She is an environmental activist and has worked over the past few years to save the Grand River from further development. She has three children and eight grandchildren.

 

 

Robin McGrath is a writer who has published several books of prose and poetry, as well as numerous articles in many periodicals. She is active in the Writers’ Alliance and recently moved to Happy Valley-Goose Bay from Newfoundland.

 

 

Columnists

Gordon Parsons, a long time resident of Happy Valley, moved to Labrador City in the early 1970s. He is now retired there after a long stint in the printing and publishing industry. He enjoys the outdoors, birdwatching, hiking, geocaching, hunting and the open road.

 

 

Beverly Nippard is a writer who was born in St. John’s, but has spent the last 30 years in Labrador. She has had stories appear in a variety of publications across Canada and has even had her poetry read on CBC.

 

 

Bill Rompkey was born in Belleoram, NL. He was appointed to the Canadian Senate after 23 years as the Member of Parliament for Labrador. A former educator in Labrador, he is the author of several books and articles about this region and its people.

 

 

Jan Dymond is a social activist from Fredericton, New Brunswick who moved to Happy Valley-Goose in the late 1990s. After 30 years on the frontlines of welfare politics she now spends her time raising her granddaughter and honing her skills as a writer.
